My third week in Scotland

Another exciting week is over now !

On Tuesday evening we shore the sheep. It was really exciting because I never done anything similar before. They were so stubborn and they did not like it so much but afterwards they looked so much better and I’m sure it’s for their best. It took us more than two hours to shear three sheep. What an evening. I think I’ll never forget this adventure.

This weekend was absolutely lovely! It was the first weekend without any sailing and I enjoyed the “free days” a lot. H.‘s parents came to visit us. They arrived on Thursday evening and we had a lovely dinner. For a starter we had salmon bruscetta, for dinner steak pie with potatoes and veggies and for desert we had home-made shortbread and cake. So it was a typical Scottish dinner but H.’s parents don’t like any foreign food. They only like Scottish food (but that’s okay for everybody). H’s parents were so nice and friendly! We had a chatty evening with a lot of laughter. H.’s father makes a lot of jokes and he always tells funny stories from the past. On Friday everybody was at school except H.’s parents of course. They went to a cheap shop they visit every time they travel to Aberdeenshire. They went there to buy clothes and little things and in the evening we had a nice dinner together.
On Saturday the children were at their rehearsal for the whole day. Their first show of “The Wizard of Oz” was in the afternoon. We went to a nice farm shop and had our lunch there. I bought a very nice sheep’s wool jumper in a dark red/violet. We also went to the Portsoy Salmon Harbor. It was not only a normal harbor, there was also a nice salmon museum in which we went! When we were standing at the harbor we had a stunning view!

I took a lot of pictures and afterwards we enjoyed a delicious ice-cream. Portsoy is kind of famous for their good ice-cream. We went back home, everyone was doing bits and bobs and after we had have dinner and drove directly to Banff Academy. There was the big Saturday evening show of M.’s and F.’s school. It was a really good musical. The children had so much fun and we enjoyed it a lot to see them acting with power and joy. Especially M. was really good. She acted so convincing that her whole family was surprised by her.

The Sunday was really relaxing. I book my trip to Edinburgh. I’m going to Edinburgh on Friday and I’m really looking forward to it. I also booked a two-day-trip to Glasgow. Glasgow is only 60km far away from Edinburgh and my travel guide says that the two cities are worth a visit! We (me and a good friend from Germany who will join me) will stay there from Friday evening till Wednesday morning. I’m sure it will be great fun.
Today was my last day at Mintlaw Academy. I’m kind of sad because I enjoyed being there. The language department was so nice to me and I enjoyed teaching their children. They were well-behaved and polite. They loved to learn foreign languages and I also think the teachers did a great job. They tried their best to make their lessons interesting, various and modern and they achieved these aims in my opinion! The next days are full of school again. I’m going to the Primary Schools to which I’ve been most of the time but on Wednesday I am also visiting Peterhead Academy. It will be a more difficult school but I think it would be a good experience.

Loch Earn- Camping for Sailing

Our weekend at Loch Earn   Loch Earn Now I am already 1 month away from home. How the time rushes! I am happy to make all these experiences. We went camping to "Loch Earn" which is a lake. In Scotland one calls a lake a "loch". The English people have difficulties to pronunce that word, but for Scotish people and German it is easy. The kids sailed and therefore we camped all together there. I must admit: This was my first real camping experience. Since then I only camped at festivals like "Rock am Ring". The proper camping is more luxurious than our party-camping. I had a thick, comfy blowing-up matress and also a cushion(!). We had warm showers with seperate cabins and we had enough electricity. That was really good. My host family are camping-experts so they bought everything we need for cooking, drinking, etc. At our first day it was so windy. We managed to build our tents up and as soon as we were inside it started to rain! What a luck! The ...

Inchcolm Abbey and the Royal Gallery

A lonely island next to the city centre- Inchcolm   This Saturday we took the ferry and went to Inchcolm Abbey. It's a beautfiul island in the Firth of Forth in Scotland. From Edinburgh we drove only 15 minutes to get the ferry and it cost 16 pounds to get to the island and back. Your first thought is that "Wow. This is quit expensive", but it was really worth going on the island! The tour was guided so the speaker told us a lot about the history of the 2 finished bridges and the one which is still in progress at the moment. It was really interesting to hear all about the bridges the railway bridge is for example now Scotland's sixth world heritage site. Then we arrived at the island which is cared for by Historic Scotland. On the island there is an abbey from the 12th century which was built by King David the First. The abbey and it's grounds are fully open to the public and it was so nice to wander around. There are a lot of birds on the island. It...

First Day

Start of my journey- Everything new My journey started on 6th May. I travelled by Eurostar to Bruxelles and from there straight to Loughborough. We came to Bruxelles and it was very busy there. Many people were running in different directions. My parents and me had enough time to spend some at a Häagen Dazs Café-quite expensive! But after a coffee americano/ cappuccino and some delicious Häagen Dazs ice-cream(banana/caramel i had to say "Goodbye". It was a sad situation and me and my mother cried (only a little bit!) before I was totally on my own. I managed the tour to London St. Pancras and from threre I had only 30 minutes to catch the East Midlands train to Loughborough. There were some trouble so I arrived 25 minutes later than I planned. But everything turned out fine. Judith catched me up and we drove home to East Leake. A little village with a supermarket, a pub, a butcher, some cafés, a vet, more churches and so on and so forth. She cooked me a perfect meal with...
